Memory Monday::Colossians 3:1-17

Mondays are hectic here at the House of Hope.  In addition to recovering from a usually hectic weekend (our Sundays are really not all that restful, to tell the truth), we also have to be out of the house early for Community Bible Study leadership meeting.  However, our best laid plans were sidetracked this morning by a mysterious rash on Lulu’s neck and shoulders (probably viral, according to the phone nurse), so here I sit at the computer, trying to get my blog in order for the week.  My More Books Mondays have added more books to my TBR list than I will possibly read this year, so I took an unannounced break from it last week, and this week I have decided to participate in Memory Monday over at The Simple Wife instead of my usual More Books Monday.  (Hat-tip to Stephanie at Olive Tree for the Memory Monday link!)

I think I started working on Colossians 3:  1-17 back before Christmas, maybe.  My girls have memorized Colossians 3:12-17 or so fairly well, and after we had worked on that for a while, I decided to add the first eleven verses to my own repertoire.  However, I’ve gotten off track with it the last few weeks, so maybe this will help hold me accountable.  Here goes my attempt to type it out, all from memory.

Colossians 3:  1-17

1.  Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, not on earthly thing. where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2.  Set your minds on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. not on earthly things. 3.  For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  4.  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.  5.  Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:  sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.  6.  Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.  7.  You once walked in these ways, in the life you once lived.  8.  But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these:  anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.  9.  Do not lie to each other, since you have put off the taken off your old self and its practices 10.  and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in the knowledge of in the image of its creator.  11.  ????  Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12.  Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, ?? humility, gentleness, and patience.  13.  ??? Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14.  And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.  15.  ???  Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  16.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing pslams, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  17.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

It looks like I have a lot of work to do.

Lord, bless the hiding of this Word in our hearts, and let it bear fruit in our lives!

  2. Great passage. I’ve been memorizing the 23rd Psalm with my daughters. I’m thinking of II Peter 1:3-7 next… or maybe something from I Cor. 13.
