Scripture memorization is one thing that we have worked hard at and struggled with, alternatingly, since Lulu was old enough for it. Now that both girls are old enough, we have made a concerted effort to make it a priority. We have always just adopted the old Nike slogan: “Just do it.” However, now that Lulu is getting a little older, she has been somewhat resistant to my efforts at making it a fun and enjoyable part of our morning. We decided to change our approach entirely and make it a family activity. Steady Eddie promised the girls that when we all had memorized five verses, we would go out for ice cream. We work on our verses every night after supper, and we managed to get these five down in just a few weeks. To be fair, I must mention that the girls and I had already learned Philippians 2:14 by listening to Hide ‘Em in Your Heart Vol. 1. When all else fails, though, bribery works wonders!
We memorized Philippians 2:3-5:
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider other better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interest of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. . .
and Philippians 2:14-15:
Do everything without complaining or arguing so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation in which you shine like stars in the universe.
If I can instill in my children a love for God’s Word while they are in my home, I will have accomplished one of the most important goals I have as a parent. I want them to remember that “the ordinances of the Lord are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.” (Psalm 19:9-10)

Hey, we used ice cream this weekend to get the girls motivated to clean up the playroom! Good stuff, ice cream.
Seriously, congratulations. Those verses are now gems embedded in their minds.
